BRIEF SCHOOL HISTORY

Herbert Hurd Primary School celebrates its rich history with pride.

Mr Herbert Hurd, after whom the school was named, was born in London in 1869 and came to Gqeberha when he was in his early twenties. He became a prominent businessman and was, for many years,  a member of the P.E. School Board. He donated the land, on which the school stands today, to the Education Authorities for the building of an English medium school in this area.

The Herbert Hurd Primary School was officially opened in January 1954 with Mr Martin Emmerick as the first Principal.

From a small suburban school, Herbert Hurd has grown, not only in numbers, but also in status and  prestige. The fine tradition built up over the years will continue to be safeguarded and promoted by all  connected with the school.
