Herbert Hurd Primary School is an English medium school nestled in the tranquil Willet Street in Newton Park, Gqeberha. It accommodates learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7 with a day option. It offers after school care facilities. We offer an inspirational experience to our learners in a safe and secure family school. Herbert Hurd Primary School maintains excellence in all spheres of school life.
The school offers both on-site and off-site facilities. Our teaching staff is professional and firmly believes in lifelong learning. Our estate staff ensures that the school grounds are safe and impeccably neat. An effective special needs education unit ensures that the educational needs of all learners are addressed. We also have a professional sports department and a music department.

There is a fine balance between academics, culture, sport and the spiritual aspect of school life at Herbert Hurd Primary School.

We have developed a co-curricular programme that focuses on more than competitive activities. We follow a dynamic, holistic physical education programme. We offer annual oratory opportunities. We annually host numerous music concerts that demonstrate the development in our choirs and brass band. Various Derby Days give abundant learners the opportunity to develop team spirit. We teach all our learners swimming as a life skill in our indoor aquatics centre.

Just imagine how your child can glow in such an exciting and stimulating environment, seventy years after our school bell rang for the first day at a promising, vibrant new school.
A SCHOOL THAT HOLISTICALLY REFLECTS EXCELLENCE
Herbert Hurd Primary School attempts to reflect excellence in all its activities., as demonstrated in the slder below.
SUSTAINABILITY AT HERBERT HURD PRIMARY SCHOOL
Herbert Hurd Primary School is one of the most sustainable schools in Gqeberha. Our learner admission numbers remain constant and when learners leave, we immediately enrol learners who want to join this prestigious school family. The learners see themselves as nurturing learners who behave with self-control, consideration and care for other learners. They communicate politely at all times, think critically about ideas and actions, are self directed and can work independently. They accept challenges and persevere until a project has been completed with finesse and excellence. Our learners are always encouraged to cooperate with teachers and peers. A creative approach to solving problems is honed. Learners at Herbert Hurd are prepared to effortlessly bridge the gap between primary school and high school.

At Hebert Hurd Primary School, we believe in equipping our learners with the necessary skills to succeed in life. That is why we focus on teaching ten core life skills that are essential for personal and academic growth. These skills include critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, time management, self-awareness, adaptability, leadership, creativity, and resilience. DO NOT BE SURPRISED IF YOUR GRADE ONE CHILD BEHAVES AS OUTLINED BELOW.
Form and break friendships easily, and can be critical of other learners. Get their feelings hurt more easily and start being very aware of other people's feelings. Are eager to please and want to “be first” and win. Understand right from wrong, but look for the loopholes in rules to get what they want. (Source: understood.org)
THE LIST BELOW UNDERLINES APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR AND RESPONSES IN THE CLASSROOM AND WILL ASSIST IN HELPING YOUR FIRST GRADER TO HAVE A POSITVE EXPERIENCE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST YEAR.

QUOTE TO REFLECT ON AND AUGMENT IN 2025
“The ability to read, write, and analyze; the confidence to stand up and demand justice and equality; the qualifications and connections to get your foot in the door and take your seat at the table — all of that starts with education.” —Michelle Obama
